Communities for Red Colobus (C4RC) - Wildlife Ranger Challenge 2026

C4RC is an ambitious community-based primate conservation and research project which was launched in 2020 to implement the Red Colobus Action Plan 2021-26 priorities for Endangered Temminck's red colobus populations in The Gambia.

Our ten rangers work in the Central River Region to protect the largest remaining population of red colobus in West Africa through the training and empowerment of local people as conservation leaders and forest guardians. Activities include environmental education, research and primate monitoring and the development of livelihood initiatives such as primate based ecotourism to protect forest resources by reducing dependence on logging for charcoal production.

Due to the commitment and expertise of the rangers, red colobus populations have remained stable, illegal logging and poaching are well controlled, several hundred children and adults are receiving weekly class and field-based education and responsible primate ecotourism is now well established at the C4RC visitor centre. This vital work is helping to secure the forest ecosystem, mitigate climate change impacts, and is contributing to food security, poverty alleviation and the empowerment of local women.

Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They hold diverse roles as conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more. The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk, is a celebration of solidarity, connection and camaraderie for the ranger profession. Culminating on 19th September 2026, the campaign raises vital funds for Africa's biodiversity guardians.
