A Fight for Survival in the Forest Canopy...

Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They hold diverse roles as conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more.

At IMPACT Madagascar, our rangers and community forest guards are the frontline defense for the island’s most vulnerable ecosystems. In Madiromirafy and Mahajeby, these dedicated teams patrol the dry deciduous forests and vital wetlands day and night to stop illegal logging and prevent devastating bushfires. Their work protects the rare biodiversity calling these habitats home, including the critically endangered crowned sifaka (Propithecus coronatus), the endangered Madagascar big-headed turtle, and a rich variety of endemic birds and reptiles.

The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk, is a celebration of solidarity, connection and camaraderie for the ranger profession. Culminating on 19th September 2026, the campaign raises vital funds for Africa's biodiversity guardians.

Give today and the Scheinberg Relief Fund will match every dollar donated, amplifying your impact.

Guardians of the Dry Forest: The Wildlife of Madiromirafy and Mahajeby

Jul 15, 2026, 3:28:58 PM

Deep within the sun-drenched, dry deciduous woodlands and winding seasonal wetlands of Madiromirafy and Mahajeby lies a fragile haven for some of the planet's most remarkable and threatened species. These unique Western Malagasy ecosystems are anchored by the presence of the critically endangered crowned sifaka, a striking lemur easily recognized by its golden-white body and dark, chocolate-brown head, which navigates the fragmented canopy with astonishing leaps. Sharing this delicate landscape is the endangered Madagascar big-headed turtle, navigating the local waterways alongside a vibrant community of rare endemic birds and uniquely adapted reptiles. As destructive bushfires and illegal logging threaten to permanently isolate these pockets of rich biodiversity, the daily patrols and habitat restoration efforts led by IMPACT Madagascar’s dedicated community forest guards remain the absolute frontline defense ensuring that this irreplaceable natural heritage continues to survive and thrive.
