Frankfurt Zoological Society Nsumbu National Park- Wildlife Ranger Challenge 2026

The Nsumbu-Tanganyika landscape is a vast area in northern Zambia, covering 7,500km2, critically important for biodiversity and people. This region is defined by water; with Lake Tanganyika in the north-east, the second largest body of freshwater in the world, fed by vast floodplains, wetlands and rivers, which flow through endemic forests and savannas. In the heart of this landscape is Nsumbu National Park (2,026km2), a source for all wildlife in the region. Nsumbu National Park (NNP) includes 100km2 of protected waters of Lake Tanganyika, one of the most biodiverse freshwater ecosystems on the planet, holding 16% of the world’s freshwater. NNP also contains the largest remaining tracts of endangered Itigi-Sumbu forests in the world, a highly fragile habitat with many endemic species.

Conserving this ecosystem so that it can sustain biodiversity, provide ecosystem services, buffer climate change and in so doing enrich the lives of local communities, is the foundation of the Nsumbu Tanganyika Conservation Progarmmes’s (NTCP) work and the primary reason for its existence. Communities in this remote and poverty, poor underserved corner of the country face limited livelihood opportunities and governance. Through support and capacity development of community-based empowering organizations, the NTCP is and uplifting local communities to better feel the benefits of natural resources through equitable access, buy-in and ownership. The NTCP is a parnetrship between the Department of National Parks and Wildlife and Frankfurt Zoological Society in Zambia.
