Tashinga Initiative - Doma - Wildlife Ranger Challenge 2024

Our Wildlife Ranger Challenge 2024 TEAM DOMA is our "mountain" team operating in the very rugged Doma Safari Area - although part of the Zambezi Valley, these Rangers are geographically very remotely based with difficult access.

Our Story

Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They hold diverse roles as conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more.

The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk, is a celebration of solidarity, connection and camaraderie for the ranger profession. Culminating on 21st September 2024, the campaign raises vital funds for Africa's biodiversity guardians.

Rangers based in Tashinga Initiative - Doma Safari Area (945 sq. km), form part of the patrol effort across the unique landscape that makes up the Zambezi Valley’s 12,820 sq km wildlife protected areas. It is mountainous, well-wooded with magnificent views.

Rangers protect territorial integrity, undertake biological monitoring, conservation management, community relations and manage equipment, resources and tourism. Rangers patrol in extremely rugged and remote conditions throughout Doma.

WRC Grants have significantly supported a total of 350 ZimParks Rangers. Those resultant WRC Grants addressed food security through the provision of monthly dry food hampers, the provision of ranger patrol kit such as backpacks and boots, the maintenance of daily field-based and law enforcement operations, thus enhancing morale and efficacy.

For WRC 2024, your support to the Doma Rangers could be far-reaching: to continue providing patrol food hampers, Rangers are operationalised with appropriate and essential patrol kit, vehicles patrol across the 945 sq. km and need fuel each month and rangers’ morale is strengthened through the provision of life insurance cover.

Give today and the Scheinberg Relief Fund will match every dollar donated, amplifying your impact. Join us in speaking up #ForWildlifeRangers

Team Doma joins with Team ZAVARU on a Trial 21km in the rugged hills of Doma Safari Area

Sep 7, 2024, 3:42:19 PM

It was a very special occasion to have these two teams - both based far from each other - join up on patrol duties in the rugged hills of Doma Safari Area. And the extra special occasion was that both teams combined for the 21km Trial to iron out any teething problems ahead of the WRC 21km half marathon on the 21st September, each team member (4 in each team) carrying 22kg in his backpack. Support our teams - they need every cent we can raise for them!

First Mini Challenge done, a training visit undertaken and backpacks delivered

Jul 27, 2024, 7:48:18 AM

Doma Safari Area is a very beautiful mountainous safari area, under huge threat from deforestation, poaching for meat and inappropriate land use in neighbouring communities, causing significant siltation of the many rivers downstream including the Zambezi. These few Rangers that work in the area need all the support we can give them. We had a terrific time with most of the team present, spent time with them in training for WRC 24, and their Mini-Challenge 2-min Push-up is very close now

WRC 24 Team Doma complete the first Mini-Challenge, the 2.4km Trial Run

Jul 20, 2024, 2:18:27 PM

Doma was one of the first two teams to complete their Mini-Challenge promptly, always efficient, always delivering, but so remotely based and hardly any visitors reach them up in their Doma Safari Area hills. The road access is very poor indeed, making the relatively short journey there a very long one indeed. This team work closely with the surrounding communities, who are keen to chop wood for their tobacco small holdings, in order to cure the tobacco. Some farmers have moved to coal.
