Lugenda Wildlife Reserve - Wildlife Ranger Challenge 2024

Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They hold diverse roles as conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more.

The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk, is a celebration of solidarity, connection and camaraderie for the ranger profession. Culminating on 21st September 2024, the campaign raises vital funds for Africa's biodiversity guardians.

The Lugenda Wildlife Reserve (Luwire) located in the Niassa Special Reserve in Northern Mozambique covers over one million acres of diverse and beautiful country within the miombo belt.  Large rivers and riparian belts, open dambos and palm flats are accentuated by towering granite inselbergs.  Apart from rhinos, there is a full and abundant diversity of wildlife.

 

Luwire’s scouts have been at the forefront of turning a depleted area into a thriving and secure national asset.  This has been achieved against a backdrop of extreme logistics, tropical disease, commercial elephant poaching, the threat of radical groups and shoestring funding.  We have turned the 5000 local people who live within Luwire from threat to partner guardians. This includes having a dedicated 50,000 ha of prime reserve area dedicated for direct community use and benefit in evidence of our valuing of them as shareholders.

The WRC fundraising platform has helped us to fill the inevitable funding gaps.  Conservation at scale is costly and we need all the assistance possible.  We thank Tusk Trust for their support and for the sense of community this event generates between far flung teams in protected areas across Africa.
