Lion Landscapes Team - Supporting and Training Lion Rangers across Laikipia

Lion Landscapes’ team is taking on the Wildlife Ranger Challenge to raise awareness of the vital role that Lion Rangers play in protecting the 2.6-million-acre Laikipia-Samburu landscape, which is home to Kenya’s third largest lion population.

Our Story

Our Lion Extension Officers (LEOs) are gearing up for the Wildlife Ranger Challenge on 21st of September to support our Lion Ranger programme. This is their second year participating, and we're excited to cheer them on! You can help too by fundraising with us or donating to our page to support the Laikipia Lion Rangers in protecting lions and other large carnivores.

Nearly 80% of lions in the Laikipia-Samburu landscape live on private ranches and conservancies, crucial for wildlife breeding and replenishment. The Laikipia Lion Rangers, trained by Lion Landscapes in partnership with The Peregrine Fund, play a vital role in monitoring and protecting these magnificent creatures, preventing livestock attacks, and collaborating with communities to stop poisonings.

In 2023, we trained 108 rangers with support from Tusk and the proceeds from the 2022 Wildlife Ranger Challenge. You can help us train even more by donating today—every dollar you give will be matched by the Scheinberg Relief Fund, doubling your impact.

Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes—conservationists, educators, community leaders, and more. The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk, celebrates these biodiversity guardians. By supporting our team, you’re directly contributing to the protection of Kenya’s wildlife and the communities that coexist with them.

Support our Lion Ranger programme!

This year we are raising funds for our Lion Ranger programme which provides training to existing rangers employed by conservation partners, giving them the know-how they need to reduce human-carnivore conflict. Lion Rangers are trained to help livestock owners adopt predator-proof practices, warn them of lions' locations, and monitor lions in high-risk areas. They respond quickly to livestock predation, following best practices to mitigate conflict and prevent future losses. In cases of poisoning, Lion Rangers collaborate with local authorities to minimise negative impacts on wildlife, people, and the environment. They also study carnivore behaviour and collect data to inform conservation efforts. By building the capacity of existing rangers, this program supports human-carnivore coexistence on a large scale. Last year, we trained 108 Lion Rangers with proceeds from the Wildlife Ranger Challenge. You can help us train even more by donating today! Every dollar you give will be matched by the Scheinberg Relief Fund, doubling your impact
