My story

Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They hold diverse roles as conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more.

The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk, is a celebration of solidarity, connection and camaraderie for the ranger profession. Culminating on 16th September 2023, the campaign raises vital funds for Africa's biodiversity guardians.

IRDNC - Integrated Rural Development & Nature Conservation supports over 52 000 rural communities in the Kunene Region, who are predominantly marginalised communities to manage their wildlife and diversify their livelihoods while protecting 4.3 million hectares of land in Kunene Region. IRDNC supports and works with over 230 Community Game Guards (CGGs) including Lion Rangers and Rhino Rangers.

The WRC has supported activities such as wildlife monitoring and patrols, retrieving snares, patrolling for high value species such as elephants and rhinos. Furthermore, it also enabled CGGs to receive above average wages and monetary support.

The 2023 WRC will be critical in continuing to motivate the CGGs to enhance natural resource stewardship. Keeping rangers in the field is critical to deter poachers. Yet, it is dangerous (lions, snakes, and having to approach rhinos on foot) not to mention the heat and rugged terrain they are expected to traverse, and difficulties of having to be away from family. Support in the form of uniforms and field equipment, funds towards joint patrols, funds for high value monitoring as well as funding for capacity building and training would be critical.

Give today and the Scheinberg Relief Fund will match every dollar donated, amplifying your impact. Join us in speaking up #ForWildlifeRangers

It is truly remarkable to see the dedication and passion of the Community Game Guards who work in the rugged and remote terrain of the Kunene Region. Their commitment to protecting the region's wildlife and natural resources, despite the challenges they face, is a testament to their resilience and the importance of their work. Working in such a challenging environment requires a high level of physical fitness, mental toughness, and adaptability. Overall, the dedication and passion of the Community Game Guards is an inspiration and a valuable example of the important role that local communities can play in protecting and managing their natural resources.
