Get to know us!
We are the Great Plains wildlife rangers in the Okavango Delta in Botswana. We are working to ensure this vital ecosystem remains healthy and functioning.
Why is it important to protect the Okavango Delta?
The Okavango Delta is one of the world's largest inland wetlands and a crucial oasis supporting an astonishing diversity of life and numerous endangered large mammals, including the largest population of African elephants in the world. The Delta is also home to wild dogs, cheetah, lion and leopard.
The health of these populations and the ecosystem relies on rangers in their daily monitoring and protection work.
What does our daily work look like?
- Collect data to build data sets of species, vegetation to inform conservation decisions and map changes over time
- Patrol for potential threats to the health of the ecosystem
- Create population data on large herbivores and carnivores
- Analyse the data we have collected
- Support regional conservation and partner with other organisations to find solutions collaboratively
- Connect with communities to discuss conservation topics
- Educate in schools on the value of conservation
- Inspire the younger generation to see job opportunities in conservation
- Specific conservation activities such as translocations, animal darting exercises
We are a match partner, which means every dollar raised for the rangers is matched! Help us support the rangers who are protecting this ecosystem.
