Our Story

COMRED is a Kenyan founded non-government organization working with over 60 villages along the Kenyan coast.  Our mission is to build resilient coastal communities and environments in the western Indian ocean (WIO) region supporting livelihood and conservation.

We have collaborated with Munje beach management (BMU) unit located in Msambweni, kwale county to establish a 40ha community led octopus closure. This initiative serves as a breeding ground to help replenish the declining fish stock and allow the ecosystem to regenerate.

A team of 15 marine wildlife rangers volunteered to be conducting patrol day and night to make sure the protected area is not disturbed. The patrol team also conduct regular beach cleanup, awareness sessions to help the community understand the role of the protected area and conduct ecological monitoring exercise to track the recovery of the protected area.

The fund we raise in the challenge will be used to train the rangers on search and rescue, equip the team with the necessary equipment for their day-to-day activity and rescue operations, and build a watchtower to aid the surveillance and work as a storage facility for their equipment.

Give today and the Scheinberg Relief Fund will match every dollar donated, amplify your impact.  Join us in speaking up

Munje Marine Rangers making waves

Sep 16, 2024, 8:21:11 AM

Munje marine rangers face numerous challenges in their line of work, including lack of a watch tower, operational base, and essential patrol gear. Lack of a speedboat to apprehend fishermen who encroach on the protected area has been a big challenge. The recent launch of a new speedboat, funded by the Coastal and Marine Resource Development (COMRED)—an organization that works with coastal communities to address environmental and socio-economic challenges—has brought renewed hope. Acquisition of a patrol boat is a significant milestone in the operations of this team. However, they still need support to build a watch tower, operation based and acquire patrol gear to strengthen their work. We are excited to announce the results of our wildlife ranger quiz that took place last week. We had two teams, Pweza and Tengefu, participate in the challenge. Team Pweza secured the 3rd position out of 13 teams in Kenya and 10th out of 60 teams in Africa. You can find the link to the results attached. https://wildliferangerchallenge.org/wildlife-ranger-quiz-2024/
