SORALO - Wildlife Ranger Challenge 2022
SORALO is taking part in the Wildlife Ranger Challenge to raise awareness of the role of 65 rangers working to protect Kenya's Southern Rift Association of Land Owners ecosystem, and support an estimated 650 livelihoods.
Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They don’t just fight poaching - they are conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more.
The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk and culminating on 17th September, celebrates their many roles, and is raising much-needed funds to support their work.
No formal protected areas exist in the SORALO region, requiring wildlife and people to coexist. Wildlife are still able to move freely across the landscape and by doing so enhance the connectivity between Mara-Serengeti and Amboseli-Tsavo ecosystems.
The key focus of SORALO’s community rangers is conserving this coexistence and landscape connectivity. Doing so is no easy feat and requires our community rangers to keep wildlife safe from people and communities safe from wildlife. Catalysing community conservation, conducting daily anti-poaching patrols, rescuing lost livestock and children, protecting farms from crop-raiding elephants, and being a friend in times of need are just some of the core responsibilities of our ranger teams.
WRC support has been critical to ensuring our rangers remain employed and have the equipment and logistical support they require to operate effectively. In doing so they have become champions of conservation and beacons of hope for their communities.
Give today, and the Scheinberg Relief Fund will match every dollar donated, amplifying your impact. Follow campaign updates on social media with #ForWildlifeRangers
Southern Rift Association of Land Owners - SORALOJul 14, 2022, 7:01:41 AM
SORALO, formed in 2007, is a community-led association of the Maasai landowners of Kenya’s South Rift and is governed by a board of locally elected Maasai leaders from its constituent communities. SORALO is founded on the vision of helping to keep this important territory healthy and connected for both the people and the wildlife who reside there, with additional recognition that protected areas are insufficient to halt the loss of biodiversity and habitats in Kenya. SORALO believes that safeguarding pastoralist rangelands can secure space for people and wildlife. Image Credit: Guy Western
